About Us

The Hyattsville Horticultural Society, one of the oldest garden clubs in America, was founded in 1916 by several University of Maryland professors. In 1929, 1931, and again in 1932, HHS was awarded the "Evening Star Cup" at the annual flower exhibition of the American Horticultural Society in Washington, D.C. We might not have known about this, had Hyattsville's Department of Public Works not found the very large silver cup we were awarded.
After being dormant for several years, it was restarted in 2006 by Gwyn Kesler. Its objective is to promote the knowledge, appreciation, and enjoyment of horticulture in the Hyattsville community and beyond via a wide range of educational and outreach programs. Membership is open to anyone who supports this objective. Dues are $10 per year. Meetings are held monthly, generally on the third Saturday of the month. Meetings alternate between the Hyattsville Municipal Building and members' homes.
